These concerted efforts are bearing fruit. Data from Statista reveals a remarkable growth in internet accessibility in Africa, with penetration rates soaring from 8% in 2010 to 40% in 2022.
This digital leap translates to hundreds of millions of Africans gaining internet access, ushering in many opportunities.
From education and economic advancements to social upliftment, the digital wave is reshaping the African narrative, solidifying its position as one of the world's emerging tech hubs.
Africa has made significant progress in expanding its digital infrastructure in recent years. This has led to a steady increase in average internet speeds across the continent.
However, there is still a wide range of variation between countries, with some having speeds that are comparable to developed countries, while others still lag.
According to Open Signal's State of the Mobile Network Experience in Africa, some countries have internet speeds as high as 34.5Mbps.
This is still below the global average of 40.6 Mbps, but it is significantly higher than the 7.89 Mbps that was recorded in Q2 2022, and 23.76 Mbps in Q2 of 2023.
